installation advice & regulations

Use the menu below for general advice on positioning built in appliances in your kitchen, and flame failure device regulations for all gas appliances.

We strongly reccomend consulting a Gas Safe Registered engineer for specific fitting and positioning regulations and advice. You can find guidance or your nearest engineer at www.gassaferegister.co.uk

General installation advice

When installing a gas oven or hob, it is essential that the advice and services of a competent Gas Safe registered engineer are sought. You can find your nearest gas engineer here. When installing an electric oven or ceramic hob, we reccommend consulting a competent electrician as the appliance may need to be wired into the mains circuit.

If the appliance utilises a standard 13amp plug, it may simply be a case of installing it yourself into a kitchen unit or carcass. Alternatively you can find a general handyman here.

Whenever dealing with mains gas or electricity it is essential that a relevant engineer is consulted.

General positioning advice

When planning your kitchen, it is worth taking the following points into account:

The benefits of an extractor hood are immediately evident, as odours, steam and heat are quickly removed. Hoods can either extract through an external wall or recirculate the air via odour-removing carbon filters.

Built in ovens and hobs should be positioned on an external wall wherever possible - this will make ventilating them easier, as the shortest possible route means much greater efficiency.

Hobs are normally fitted into the work-top over a 600mm wide kitchen unit.

Built in hobs should not be positioned under a window wherever possible

Installing a refrigerator adjacent to an oven will increase the amount of energy needed by both appliances.

Hob placement
The following are the recommended minimum dimensions for hob placement. Please note that individual manufacturers may offer their own guidance.

Built under ovens

Built under ovens, as their name suggests, are built under the worktop. 600 single ovens or 720 double ovens can be used. 600 single ovens will require the use of a spacer panel to make up the height between worktop and plinth.

Flame failure devices

A flame supervision device (FSD) or flame failure device (FFD) is part of the gas burner system that detects if the flame is extinguished, and if so, cuts off the gas supply automatically.

Regulations state that all gas cooking devices manufactured after 31st March 2010 must have an FSD fitted. For more information on the regulations visit www.gassaferegister.co.uk or speak to your local Gas Safe engineer.
